Joanna Russ, ‘The Female Man’

An interesting rush of information. Narrative POV is played with in a style reminiscent of Virginia Woolf, which encourages reader confusion and frustration. Basic premise seems to be a diplomat from a parallel earth without men appearing in 1970’s New York and causing havoc with her lifestyle, which seems to be a largely lesbian one. I feel the feminist message is undermined somewhat by the portrayal of the other-dimensional women as stock butch lesbians, all dungarees, short hair and manual labour. However, I may very well be missing the point on this one, but to be honest the writing is so impenetrable and dull that I don’t really care.
